Naltrexone should not be taken by pregnant women. It is not known if the medication gets into breast milk, however, breastfeeding mothers should better avoid using Naltrexone, too. Naltrexone should be avoided by patients with acute hepatitis, or severe liver or kidneys problems. The medication should not be combined with drugs that contain opioids, such as codeine and morphine (they include some painkillers and cough medicines). One must stop taking any sorts of narcotics 7 to 10 days before treatment with Naltrexone is started, because the medication can cause severe withdrawal symptoms before the person is detoxified. In case with alcohol, the period of abstinence should be at least 5 days prior to starting treatment. And of course, Naltrexone must not be used if a patient is allergic to it.
